Jordan Walks for AIDS

Jordan Mitzel is participating in AIDS WALK Charlotte again this year. This is his 6th year walking and raising money for RAIN. To date Jordan has raised almost $35,000 for the cause. This year, he wants to lead his own team of walkers.

Thoughts from our Communications Director

Words from Bob | February 2012
I am honored to officially be a part of FUMC. I have enjoyed my time working here and getting to know some of the members of the FUMC Family. It has been a pleasure working with the volunteers in the office and I look forward to fellowship with more of FUMC’s outstanding congregation.

I was brought up in the United Methodist Church and have been a member of Matthews UMC since going through Confirmation in the 6th grade. Previously, I worked at MUMC as both an After School Teacher and as a member of the Facility Staff. My mother, Gwynn, is the Director of Nursery & Preschool Ministries at MUMC, supporting Sunday School, Children’s Church, and any childcare needs. My father, Robert, is part of the Facility Staff at Myers Park UMC. You could say our family has a large area of Charlotte’s United Methodist churches covered.

When I am not at FUMC supporting the church in all of its communication efforts, I am busy with my family and running my own small business. I started my own digital marketing company last year and have been blessed to be able to work from home and see my family as much as possible. My wife, Jen, is a Teacher Assistant at Matthews Elementary School. We have two boys, 4-year-old Robert IV, and 3-month-old William. We live in Matthews and enjoy traveling to the beach and Walt Disney World.

I Know that God led me to this position and look forward to what He has in store for us all. I am excited to bring my online marketing skills to FUMC and helping Grow this great church. I pray that we can Go forth and spread the Word and love of our savior Jesus Christ to the people of Charlotte and beyond.

May First Epistle

2012 – 2013 Appointments
The SPRC is pleased to announce the 2012 – 2013 appointments of Tracie Rose, Jonathan Coppedge-Henley and Elizabeth Coppedge-Henley to First UMC, Charlotte.

Rev. Rose will be serving here 1/4 time and we are thrilled to be able to compensate her for her service. Prior to this Rev. Rose has been compensated with the coverage on education, travel and annual conference expenses. Her primary focus will be congregational care.

Rev. Jonathan Coppedge-Henley is appointed here at a 3/4 capacity. This came as a request of the Coppedge-Henley’s in order to accommodate church budget needs. His job will be membership growth and development.

Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Coppedge-Henley is appointed here full-time as Senior Pastor. She will continue to focus on administration, teaching and, with our other pastors, worship leadership.
The appointments will be fixed at the 2012 Annual Conference.

First UMC staff continues to covet your prayers, your presence, your gifts, and your service.

Christian Images in The Hunger Games | Young Adult Gathering
Sunday, May 20th | 2:00 pm at the Phillip’s Place Theater (in South Park) “The Hunger Games”

Dinner – at Brixx Pizza on Fairview Road at 5:00 pm (just up the road from the movie theater).

If you have already seen the movie, come join us for conversation!

If the movie time changes or it is cancelled, we’ll let you know . . . . . either way, we will be eating at Brixx at 5:00 pm!

Weddings

The wedding is a sacred service of worship and one that should be unforgettable in both beauty and meaning. We believe in providing a spiritual, loving, and nurturing relationship to all of the couples who begin their life together at First United Methodist Church.

Weddings are conducted in our beautiful sanctuary, which is available to both members and friends of the congregation. It is a lovely setting for weddings both large and small.

The Church also offers a small group class for all wedding couples called Making Love Last a Lifetime.

Room in the Inn

The Urban Ministry Center of Charlotte organizes congregations of every faith to open their facilities to homeless people as guests from December through March.

Room In The Inn at FUMC is on Sunday nights. Homeless men, women and children are served dinner and provided a warm, safe place to sleep in the Fellowship Hall. Showers are available. Breakfast is served the next morning and guests receive a bag lunch.

Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve food, fellowship and serve as overnight hosts for the guests. To learn more, please contact Sandi Ridout at 704.650.2353 or s.b.ridout@att.net.

Gathering Class
Meets in the Gathering Classroom, 2nd Floor Office Suite; various ages.

Seekers Class
Meets in the Small Dining Room of the Fellowship Hall; various ages. Contact Joe Hamby, 704.574.6154.

Adult Fellowship Class
Meets in the 2nd Floor, Office Suite; older adults; led by Rev. Bob Boggan. Contact Ann Irwin, 704.588.4480.

Meditation Class
Meets in the Parlor off of the Fellowship Hall. Contact Jane Patterson, 704.334.7145.

CONNECT
Meets in the Library. Discuss the message from the CONNECT service and connect with others. Contact Jonathan Coppedge-Henley, jonathanch@fumccharlotte.org.

Other Groups

Young Adults Fellowship Group
Meets at the Warehouse, 1001 West 1st Street, Uptown on Sundays at 7:00pm. Contact Paige Wilson, apw78@aol.com.

Small Groups
Small group communities gather for supportive Christian friendship, accountability, encouragement, reflection and prayer. Contact the Church Office to find out more information.

DISCIPLE Bible Study
This Bible study is an in depth, year long study of Scripture. Call the Church Office for dates and times of this course offering.
